UNESCO – Youth & Sport Funshop in Manila, Philippines

  1. INTRODUCTION

Youth and Sport “Funshop” is a programme sponsored by UNESCO and the Philippine Sport Commission, supported by the Asian Development Bank through its Youth for Asia initiative. This programme is for young leaders from the ASEAN Member States and Timor-Leste. Meanwhile  the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) ‘Funshop’ is specially designed to enhance meaningful youth participation in sports policy design, foster co-operation across the region and make the case for sport as an important development tool. This is the first cohort of the Sport And The SDGs Youth organised by UNESCO.

The 3-day programme is both learning and action-based, complete with obstacle courses, interaction with local youths and field trip to visit and participate actively in local grassroot sports for development programmes .

DURING QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSION.III) DAY 3 : FIELD TRIP TO MALABON

Our field trip was filled with joy and understanding more of the people in Malabon. The city in the top part of Metro Manila was consisting mainly of families that are going through poverty. The problem that the city is facing is the limited school funding, so many children did not go to school due to this fact. Hundreds of children there did not have proper clothes to wear and they would also implore the tourist to give them money. For example, we went to the cathedral in Malabon. Children age 3 to 5 were begging for every cent that they could find.

Many organisations came and helped support these poor children in Malabon. We visited a MuayThai Training Camp for those that could not go to school and create another career for them to focus and be a better person in their lives.

Overall, the trip had taught us how to help with our own community in these situation.

5) SUGGESTION

I believe that UiTM itself can make all the SDGs come to a reality. I strongly suggest we put our effort on SDG 3 (IMPROVED HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF ALL, AT ALL AGES), 4 (QUALITY EDUCATION, AND LIFELONG LEARNING FOR ALL AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT THROUGH SPORT), 12 & 13 (SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION PATTERNS AND URGENT ACTIONS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS IMPACTS). It is very doable and positive impact will be the result of all these actions.

6) CONCLUSION

Conclusion, the program taught me many learning points in life and how to improve it. It has proven why we as a human being should help others that is suffering from poverty. It is not the life that they choose, it is the life that they are born into. We can make this world a better place. Someone needs to help, so be that someone that always lend a hand to help. It was a very different funshop compared to other funshop that I had attended. Great exposure and experience overall.
